With scientific and technological advancements, students learn matters at school at ages earlier than their previous generations. This has given rise to career opportunities far beyond what was available to their parents and grandparents. Parents are unaware as well of the possibilities that their children can have access to. Because of inaccurate guidance or familial pressure, students take up careers that they may not be apt for, and go through a crisis after a few years by way of unhappiness at work and mental stress.
We aim to guide students to follow a path best suited to their personality, abilities, learning style and areas of strength. This will help them to not only choose the right stream going into 11th standard but also the necessary college degrees and a professional career thereafter. We also aim to guide professionals who after a few years of work, feel stuck or unhappy or confused about their career direction.
I am a graduate Engineer and have worked in the Middle East my entire life. Growing up, I was fascinated by the drawings that my father (an Engineer as well) would bring home over the weekends, and decided to follow in his footsteps. In my career, I was involved in many construction projects in roles including but not limited to management, planning, procurement and contracts.
In my mid-thirties, I realized I was unhappy and felt unsuited to my role at the time. However, I had no avenue to either discuss or receive guidance as to alternate career paths. So, I continued to work, thinking positively, and reached a managerial position before finally leaving.
Having children of my own, I realized that they were confused as to their way forward and that I was not in a position to guide them to make the right choices in their education and thereby their career path. We consulted a career guidance counselor, who put us in the right direction, based on which my children moved forward with clarity and far more confidence than before.
This became my turning point…the thought that there might be parents like me and a lot of children like mine, pushed me to take my step toward Career Guidance. I also realized that I could assist a professional as well, who might be going through a stage similar to mine in my career. If I could guide one child or one professional to make the right choice and help him/her on his/her journey to a successful career, I believe I would have done something worthwhile.
